Have I failed my children?

This weekend we were in charge of dessert for our small group.  I made a pumpkin pie for the adults, and bought ice cream cones for the kids (similar to drumsticks, but a different brand).  My kids simply LOVE desserts (I mean who doesn't!) and they happily finished (mostly...I am a little more lenient when it comes to small group) their meal to gain a treat.  They dove into their ice cream treat, but about halfway into his treat Corey looks up at me and asks me a question.  A question that has me wondering if I have truly failed my children.  "Mom," he says, "is this something we can eat?" I look down and see that he is pointing to the cone! Can it be that my child is three and this is the FIRST time he has experienced ice cream in a cone? Yes...yes it is his first ice cream cone and yes, I think I have failed them.

Chinese food

The boys and I were out running errands this morning.  It was getting to be about lunch time, so I piled us all back in the car to head home.  The following is the conversation I had with Corey that lasted the entire short ride home.

Corey: Where are we going?
Me: Home so we can eat lunch.
Corey: I want Chinese food.
Me: We are going home to eat. Besides, I don't think you really like Chinese food.
Corey: I like meat on sticks.
Me: True, but it is expensive to eat out, so that is why we are going home to eat.
Corey: Well, I am going to hop in your seat and drive to Chinese food.
Me: Even if you did do that, Chinese food costs money.
Corey: Then I will take some of Daddy's money and drive to get Chinese food.
Me: That would be stealing.  You can't take other people's money
Corey: Then I will take money out of my piggy bank and go to the Chinese place and give them the money and the card and they will give me Chinese food.
Me: That is how it works, but I don't think that is the best way to use your money.  You have been saving up for your flash light.  The flash light would last a really long time, but the Chinese food would be gone right away. You need to make good decisions with your money.  Mommy and Daddy have to make decisions like that all the time. That's why we don't eat out all the time.
Corey: The Chinese place has lots of water.
Me: Wha..Hu?
Corey: For the fish.
Me: Ah yes, they do have lots of water. (thankful to be in our driveway)

I'm not sure if I should be proud or scared that he knows so much about how money works...he is 3 people...3!!!
